Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 48 hours – or simply don’t have Facebook – you would have seen an influx of women going barefaced for Cancer Research UK with the hashtag #nomakeupselfie.
I admit that I thought this was a stupid thing at first, because it seemed to be just photos of women with no make up on talking about raising awareness, but not actually doing anything to help the charity. However, in the last 48 hours, people have really embraced the gimmick and started donating by text. Each text donates £3 to Cancer Research UK and now, along with their selfies, they are uploading text receipts of their donations to really hammer home the true cause of this wonderful social media campaign.
It proves that, not only are the British public very generous, but also highlights that social media can be used to make a great campaign go viral. Without real time micro blogging sites, this could never have taken off the way it has. It also highlights the power of the humble hashtag!
So please get involved! You don’t need to post photos if you feel uncomfortable, but at the very least, text BEAT to 70099, whether you are female, male, bare faced or full of slap! I donated twice!
